Who is the course for? Gardening and woodland novices are welcome as are experienced gardeners - all will find the course fascinating.

The course is based around plenty of outdoor activity so reasonable fitness is recommended.

We have facilities for those who would like to camp overnight on the farm - no charge.
Food and refreshments
Teas, coffees and a light lunch including delicious pies and pasties (with vegetarian options) from our own bakery are included in the course price. An evening meal is available on the Saturday evening: cost £6.50
What you will need to bring
Plenty of layers of warm and waterproof clothing and good footwear to cope with the Treflach micro-climate - expect sun, rain and wind, probably all at once. Gardening gloves, camera, pens, pencils and a notepad recommended.

1. What's Forest Gardening? - Classroom
  • natural principles of the forest: stacking, succession, cycling, edge, diversity, energy, water, waste, inputs and outputs, underground, mycelium
  • how is a forest garden different to naturally generated forest?
  • perennials and annuals
  • role of animals, clearings and pathways within forest
2. Woodland Walk: observing these principles in Treflach Farm's woodlands

3. Huge Scope of Forest Gardening - Classroom
  • the need to do things differently: agri-business, the ever-increasing strain on Earth and human systems and what to do about it - our transition to sustainable living
  • financial wealth vs. earth wealth - Treevolution, Earthalism, designing for maximum diversity and local abundance
  • slides and film clips of forest gardening examples, home scale and field scale and different climates where forest gardening is changing lives
  • some important Forest Gardening people: Robert Hart, Chris Evans, Chris Dixon, Simon Fairley, Geoff Laughton, Bill Mollison, Sepp Holzer.
4. Forest Gardening at Treflach Farm

- ABOUT COURSE TUTOR, IAN WATT -
I have been exploring practical eco-solutions on projects in the UK and Portugal and helping to organise and teach therapy and permaculture courses for many years. I use all my experience to make these days as informative and enjoyable as possible with plenty of different approaches: talks, slideshows, film clips, group work and above all, plenty of hands on learning and outdoor observation. Learn and have fun!
